Renal Week 2003 Broke All Previous Records!

The final numbers are in, and Renal Week 2003 in San Diego broke all previous attendance records! For the first time, we broke the 12,000 mark for total registrants, but quantity is not all that matters. Again, special thanks to the Program Committee, under the able and adept leadership of Bruce Molitoris, and to the PGE Committee, led by ASN’s own educational wizard, Bob Narins, for an exceptional and exciting program.

ASN Web Site Improvements

We have recently made a number of changes to the ASN web site. To make it easier for our members to log into the site, we have eliminated the need to create a special username and password; instead, you can now use your ASN member ID to log into the site, and there is now no need at all for a password! If you don’t remember your Member ID, look at the label on a recent issue of JASN or call or e-mail the ASN offices to get your ID.

Now that your ID is your ticket into the Members Only portions of the web site, it is important that you renew your membership. Just as a reminder, you will especially want to be able to access the following:

New ASN Job Placement Service Now Available

The NEW Job Placement Service on www.asn-online.org is now available!! Both employers and job applicants will find that the new site is far more user-friendly. The service is FREE to members and, as such, is a great membership benefit. Candidates will be able to scan through all posted positions, search by selected categories, such as geographic location, or search by keyword (such as Transplantation) to narrow their search. Once they have narrowed their search, the system will pull all applicable jobs for the candidate to view. Candidates then select the job(s) in which they are interested and view all descriptive information. Information for the position’s main contact is available to the candidate on the same page as the job posting; if candidates wish to apply for the job they’re viewing, they simply click on a button that says Apply for This Position. Candidates can also send a personalized e-mail message to the prospective employer, along with their attached electronic CV.

Employers pay a modest flat fee for each job posting. The online form that employers use to post jobs is easy to use, with drop-down fields offered whenever possible. First-time employer users will be guided by a "wizard" through those portions of the posting that are mandatory, and then categories and free-form information is completed by the employer to complete the posting. Information includes the following:

There are currently hundreds of positions posted to the site. If you are currently "looking," go to the ASN web site now to see what opportunities are available. If you have an open position and want to advertise it to the entire ASN membership, visit the site at www.asn-online.org.

Congratulations to ASN Leadership

As most of you know, William Mitch officially assumed the presidential reins during the business meeting at Renal Week. In addition, Tom Berl of Colorado was elected to the President-Elect position and Tom Coffman, from Duke University, was elected to the open Councilor position. Finally, because John Stokes’ term as Secretary-Treasurer ended at the end of 2003, Alan Krensky assumed this set of important responsibilities. Congratulations to all!

ASN Expands Grant Portfolio

ASN Council voted in Summer 2003 to significantly develop and expand its current grant portfolio. Changes will be phased in over the next 4 years; when completed, it will effectively double the annual grant funding provided by ASN to its members. All of these changes have been posted to the ASN web site, along with eligibility information, application forms, and details for submitting an application for funding. However, several of the biggest changes are highlighted below.

First, the number of Gottschalk awards has been increased from two to as many as six per year to meet the increasing demand for this award and to significantly broaden this category of award to a new area of support. Under the new criteria, Gottschalk awards will be made available to support independent career development by supporting the transition of a young faculty member to an investigator-initiated award (R series). Young faculty within 7 years of appointment to a full-time faculty position and without other extramural R01 grant support (or equivalent) will be eligible for funding, as in previous years. The Gottschalk award is expected to support the transition to the first independent investigator-initiated award, and it is viewed as critical in supporting faculty development at this important juncture, in hopes of retaining academic nephrologists and fostering career development for nephrologists in investigative careers. Note that ASN also jointly sponsors several grants with sister organizations, and the eligibility for most of these joint grants has been similarly modified.

Second, with current limitations on NIH funding, it is anticipated that the "R01-to-R01" award (the Scherbenske award) may be more sought after than ever. This 1-year bridge grant has been increased from a $50,000 to a $100,000 award. Further, the eligibility criteria have been broadened to include any competitive RO1 application that was scored but not funded.

Third, a totally new opportunity — New Directions for Established Investigators Grant— has been developed to provide funding to a more senior investigator with a proven and solid track record who wishes to explore a new and innovative area of research. To begin, one of these awards will be made each year, providing 1 year of funding in the amount of $100,000.

Finally, the Student Scholar Award has been changed from a 1-year research program to a summer or semester research program (summer vacation after first year, or any full semester elective period) that may be renewable for up to three total periods. Preference will be given to students who reapply for a second or third research period if sufficient progress in the initial research period is documented.

Deadlines are fast approaching for many of these grants! For details, go to www.asn-online.org now.
