Featured Free Communication Presentations
New this year, the ASN will be holding Featured Free Communication Presentations to highlight some of Renal Week's most exciting original science. These sessions will occur from 10 a.m. –Noon on Friday November 2, Saturday November 3, and Sunday November 4, 2007. Each session will focus on "cutting edge" studies, which will report data that broadly appeals to the renal community. On Friday, the session entitled, "Diabetic Nephropathy Genes: New Information from the Gene Hunters," will report unpublished data from the major consortia funded by NIDDK to identify genetic variants that regulate diabetic nephropathy pathogenesis. Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) will be the topic of a second "Featured Free Communication Presentation" on Friday morning. Saturday's topic for this exciting new feature is called "This Year's Outstanding Abstracts." The outstanding abstracts selected for the session were selected by the Program Committee from over 4600 submissions for presentation. To allow maximum opportunity for these exciting abstracts, each of these presentations is also programmed as part of a regular Free Communication session during the meeting. Finally on Sunday, the session will focus on results from "Late Breaking Clinical Trials and Studies."
Stay tuned to the ASN website at www.asn-online.org for additional information on these new featured sessions.

The Renal Physicians Association (RPA) will also be sponsoring a session at Renal Week. It will take place on Saturday, November 3, 2007, also in Room 304. This session will be titled: "Nephrology Practice in the "Gray Zone": Exploring Industrial Influence in Clinical Practice Guideline Development" and will address the role of industry in the development of clinical practice guidelines. It will be moderated by Keith Bellovich, DO, from St. Clair Specialty Physicians, PC, in Detroit, MI.
Physician Fee Schedule
The Proposed Rule for Revisions to Payment Policies under the Physician Fee Schedule for Calendar Year (CY) 2008 (Proposed Rule) was released on July 12, 2007. The ESRD provisions were mostly a continuation of policies outlined in previous fee schedules.
In our comment letter, ASN joined with Kidney Care Partners (KCP) to urge the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to work transparently with the renal community as it considers a CY 2010 transition to trend analysis using ASP (Average Sales Price)-based historical expenditure data for ESRD-related drugs. ASN also requested further clarification of the budget neutrality calculation used for the geographic wage index due to its significant consequences for small providers and expressed support for the inclusion of ESRD and CKD-related measures in the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI).
