Kawano Hitomi et al.: Differential contribution of three mitogen-activated protein kinases to PDGF-BB-induced mesangial cell proliferation and gene expression. J Am Soc Nephrol 14: 584–592, 2003.
In Figure 1C of this article, the ERK band image was incorrect. It was the same image as p38 band image. The institution where this work was performed (Osaka City University) has required publication of an erratum and a corrected Figure 1C ERK image. The band image labeled as ERK in Figure 1C shows the phosphorylation, not of ERK, but of Elk-1, which is a substrate of ERK (see page 586 of the paper).
As shown in the corrected version of Figure 1C ERK band image, there are two phospho-Elk-1 bands, above and below, with the lower band having a molecular weight of 41 kDa and the upper band having a molecular weight of 45 kDa. The left lane labelled (-) is a mesangial cell sample in an unstimulated state, with no adenovirus infection or PDGF-BB stimulation. The Control, the middle lane, indicates a sample infected with Ad-LacZ and stimulated with PDGF-BB. The “Ad(+)” in the right lane indicates a sample infected with Ad-DN-ERK and stimulated with PDGF-BB. In the unstimulated state (−), Elk-1 phosphorylation is seen only at 41 kDa, and no phosphorylation is detected at 45 kDa. Elk-1 is noticeably phosphorylated at 45 kDa by PDGF-BB stimulation (Control), but it can be seen that phosphorylation in the 45 kDa band is suppressed by the addition of Ad-DN-ERK (Ad(+)), indicating that Ad-DN-ERK suppresses ERK activity.
This error did not affect the conclusions of the paper. We apologize for this mistake.
